GENERAL RULES:

1.) Competition Registration entry fees are non-refundable/non-transferrable. It is a live event and refund and/or transfer will not be accepted after the purchase.

2.) If there are fewer than 3 entries in any division, the MBF reserves the right to cancel or combine that division. Entry fees will be refunded if the division is canceled, and the fee will apply to the combined division.

3.) COSTUMES. Competitors must wear costumes and shoes regardless of the environment in which they choose to perform. Jeans are discouraged as costumes. Costumes will be judged as part of Presentation.

4.) All circumstances will be taken into consideration, and they will not affect the score. This includes space and floor limitations and other restrictions related to current world circumstances.

5.) DOSSARDS. Only one person from each couple will wear a number sign pinned to their back. In any Amateur Division, the male dancer will wear the number sign, and in any Pro-Am Division, the Amateur dancer will wear the number sign.

6.) NO PROPS are allowed in any category. Props are defined as items not part of a dancer’s costume and not attached for the entire duration of the choreography.

7.) Rhythm must be consistently maintained throughout the performance.

8.) The competitor’s choreography must predominantly feature distinct and characteristic steps and dance elements that represent the rhythm chosen by the competitor (Bachata, Salsa, Hustle, etc.).

9.) In their respective categories, participants must use music that aligns with the dance style, such as Salsa, Bachata, Hustle, etc.. Mixing music from other genres is prohibited.

10.) Maintaining consistent musical timing throughout the performance is essential. Non-compliance with this rule may lead to point deductions in Timing or Musicality categories.

11.) For the Showcase Category, dips, drops, lifts, and shines are allowed but limited to 30% of the performance. Tricks, Dips, Drops, and Flares must be successfully executed to receive credit.

12.) For Heats, dips, drops, lifts, or tricks are not permitted. Shines, however, are allowed, provided they make up no more than 20% of the performance. Any maneuver where both partners elevate both feet off the ground simultaneously, assisted or supported by each other, is not allowed. If either dancer takes both feet off the floor, there will be deductions in points. Furthermore, if any part of either dancer’s body is raised above their partner’s shoulder level, the couple will be disqualified, and no refund will be provided.

13.) Length of Routine:

Solo Showcases – 1:30 to 2:30 minutes
Couple Showcases – 1:30 to 2:30 minutes
Team Showcases – 1:30 to 3:00 minutes

14.) Showcase Categories will have no more than 20 seconds to get into place for the performance, and 20 seconds to exit the floor at the conclusion. For Heats, no entrances or exits.

15.) Submission of Music. A maximum of 3 songs can be mixed into the routine. Competitors must submit music in advance through links on the competition page. Identified with competitor name, song title and category/division.

16.) Categories are divided into 6 groups – Professional, Amateur, Pro-Am Female, Pro-Am Male, Teams and 17 Under.

17.) Divisions will be separated by skill levels (Beginner, Newcomer, Novice, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Pre-Advanced and Advanced), age groups (17 and Under, 18 and Over, Over 40, and Over 50), as well as status (Solo and Same-Gender).

18.) Competitor may dance up to two levels (their own level, plus one level up). This applies to both Showcase and Heats.

19.) Order of competitors in Showcase divisions will be assigned in reverse order as competitors check in for each division to expedite the process.

20.) All competitors must check-in during designated times. Late check-in may result in disqualification without a refund.

21.) The head judge will have the final say on all discrepancies, and any questions/disputes should be brought to their attention.

22.) Each competitor must have a Full Pass (Competitor Pass) and register in their chosen Category and Division to participate.

23.) Verbal expressions like singing or talking during the performance are discouraged.

24.) By registering, competitors release the Montreal Bachata Conventions and judges of all liabilities.

DEFINITIONS:

Dance Levels: 

Refer to the hierarchical stages or categories that classify dancers based on their skill, experience, and proficiency. These levels help to ensure that competitors are placed in groups with others who are at a similar stage of their dance journey, creating a fair and balanced competitive environment. The levels commonly range from beginner to advanced, and dancers may be categorized as:

1. Newcomer: Dancers who are new to the style or have limited experience in the dance form.
2. Novice: Dancers who have gained some proficiency and experience in the style but are still developing their skills.
3. Pre-Intermediate : Dancers that are advanced beginners or those in Intermediate classes with some competition experience. They can handle rhythmic diversity and execute single and 1 1/2 turns, but not multiple spins or free spins.
4. Intermediate: Dancers who have a solid grasp of the fundamentals and are capable of executing more complex movements and combinations.
5. Pre-Advanced: For high-level intermediate and advanced dancers with strong skills aiming for a professional level.
6. Advanced: Dancers who have achieved a high level of skill, mastery of techniques, and a deep understanding of the dance form.

These levels help judges and organizers ensure that participants are competing against others who are at a similar skill level, promoting fairness and providing appropriate challenges for each dancer’s abilities.

Newcomer Level :

This level is designed for dancers who are entirely new to the style, possess limited experience, or aim to grasp the core principles. It is tailored for those entering their first competition. It’s crucial to uphold continuous connection between partners, thus avoiding solo footwork moments (“shines”). Movements should remain contained within the designated space; there should be no crossing the room. Within this level, dancers are permitted to execute single and 1 ½ left turns, exemplified by the Cross Body Lead technique. However, executing double turns or multiple spins is not allowed. Furthermore, consecutive 1 1/2 turns are also restricted.

Novice Level :

Geared toward dancers who possess some prior class experience or a few months of practice, showcasing a firm grasp of foundational skills. This level caters to individuals who are new participants in the current season’s competition. Typically, novice contestants hold less than 1 year of studio training. They possess a comprehension of and can execute basic dance elements.

The Novice level underscores sound fundamental dancing and is tailored for novice dancers and competitors. It is essential to uphold continuous partner connection, precluding individual footwork moments (“shines”), and refrain from traversing the dance floor. Participants are permitted to execute single and 1 ½ left turns, particularly within the Cross Body Lead technique. However, executing double turns or multiple spins is restricted. Furthermore, consecutive 1 1/2 turns are not permitted.

Suggested Patterns*:

Salsa: Include single underarm turns, 1 ½ turns while moving (like cross body leads), transitioning in and out of patterns, and cross body lead leading to a check position.

Hustle: Encompass Cross Body Lead, Wheel, Hesitations, a combination of underarm turns, New York Walk, Las Vegas, Grapevine, Shadow with Comb, Sliding Door, Cross Body Lead integrated with an Underarm Turn, Leader’s Behind the Back Pass, and Open Breaks; This list also incorporates any pattern from the IHDA Bronze Manual.

Bachata: Integrate single turns to the right and left, lateral and forward-backward travel, the sweetheart pattern, and so on.

Pre-Intermediate Level :

Geared toward experienced dancers, this level accommodates confident individuals with substantial technical knowledge and a strong command of the rhythmic language of the dance style. The content within this tier presents challenges across rhythm, technique, and tempo.

The Pre-Intermediate level targets advanced beginners and those engaged in Intermediate level classes, with limited exposure to competition. This tier showcases heightened rhythmic diversity, enabling dancers to incorporate elements beyond the basic foundations. Participants are allowed to execute single and 1 1/2 turns, including consecutive 1 1/2 turns (as seen in cross body leads). However, executing multiple spins is not permitted, and free spins are also disallowed.

Suggested Patterns:

Salsa: Encompass single or consecutive 1 1/2 turns (e.g., cross body leads), traveling turns, wrap turns, Around the World (natural top), Bridge, cross body lead leading to a check position, waiter turn, and more.

Guideline: The Pre-Intermediate category typically welcomes dancers with at least a year of experience, potentially including some competition exposure.

Intermediate Level :

Designed for dancers entering their second year of dance, this level marks the phase where dancers begin to incorporate more intricate figures and assemble longer routines. Participants are well-acquainted with both rhythms and patterns, along with the genre’s technical nuances. This tier aims to enhance the execution of moderately basic content while introducing slightly more demanding material. It caters to those who have mastered fundamentals, established solid technique, and are striving to cultivate professional performance skills.

This level introduces free spins, double turns, linear travel, and the kinds of movements commonly seen on nightclub dance floors. It’s particularly suitable for social hustle, salsa, or bachata. The Intermediate level introduces added rhythmic diversity, featuring syncopations and enhanced body movement and styling. It permits Intermediate-level patterns, including double turns, syncopations, and shines. Multiple spins beyond a double are not allowed.

Suggested Patterns:

Salsa: Encompass Cross Body Leads with 1 ½ turns, Coca Cola, Around the World (Natural Top), Double outside turns, Double spot turns.

Hustle: Integrate Swivels, Diva Walks, various Wrap Turn Variations, New York Walk with Release, Progressive Circular Basic, Double Outside Turns with Variations, T-Turns with Variations, Diamond Turns, Double Syncopated Elements, and Double Illusion Turn.

*Note: The presented patterns are offered as suggestions only. You have the flexibility to include your own patterns while adhering to the established guidelines.

Guideline: Intermediate participants typically possess 1-2 years of dancing experience, with potential exposure to competition.

Pre-Advanced Level :‍

For high level intermediate and advanced dancers who have strong skills and working towards dancing at a professional level.

Advanced Level : 

Geared towards competitors with extensive years of competition experience, the Advanced level caters to dancers who have engaged in dancing for more than 3 years and are dedicated to honing their expertise. This stage involves preparing for professional performances or engagements. It targets those with abundant experience and solid technique, possessing the capability to perform at a professional standard.

The Advanced level caters to more dedicated competitors. Dancers should have a firm grasp of intermediate-level material before progressing to the advanced stage. This tier surpasses mere proficiency in social dancing, aiming at dancers with robust technical aptitude, impeccable timing, adept musical interpretation, and exceptional partnering skills.

Guideline: The Advanced category generally comprises students with at least 2 years of dancing experience, possibly including prior competition involvement or participation in student performance teams or amateur teams.

Divisions:

Refers to distinct categories or groups into which participants are organized based on certain criteria. These criteria could include factors such as age, skill level, dance style, or other relevant characteristics. Divisions ensure that competitors are competing against others who are similar in terms of their dance experience, age range, or technical abilities. This helps to create a fair and equitable playing field, allowing dancers to showcase their skills and artistry within a more appropriate and relevant context.

Amateur :

Participating in professional-level dance competitions is not allowed for amateurs, and they cannot take on the professional role in Pro-Am competitions. They also have not competed in the professional level. On the other hand, amateur-level dancers have the freedom to teach, perform, and receive compensation for their teaching and performances.

Amateur Over 40 Divisions :

Defined as an amateur couple whose partners are BOTH 40 years of age or older on the day of the competition. A couple is defined as one male and one female unless otherwise stated such as in the “Same-Gender” divisions.

Amateur Over 50 Divisions :

Defined as an amateur couple whose partners are BOTH 50 years of age or older on the day of the competition. A couple is defined as one male and one female unless otherwise stated such as in the “Same-Gender” divisions.

Amateur Over 60 Divisions :

Defined as an amateur couple whose partners are BOTH 60 years of age or older on the day of the competition. A couple is defined as one male and one female unless otherwise stated such as in the “Same-Gender” divisions.

Amateur Team Showcase Divisions :

All the members of the Team are Amateurs.

Heated (Just Dance) Divisions :

In this division, all partnered dancers take the stage or floor simultaneously, moving to music chosen by the organizers or DJ. Each heat typically lasts for about 1 to 1.5 minutes. This category focuses on lead and follow dynamics rather than predetermined choreography. Its aim is to showcase partners’ skill in connecting, timing, musicality, and creativity while adapting to various music. Please note that lifts, tricks, flares, or drops are not allowed in this context.

Open Division :

A division in which it is open to all levels, all ages, all dance genres and all styles unless otherwise specified in the division title.

Over 40 Divisions :

Defined as an amateur couple whose partners are BOTH 40 years of age or older on the day of the competition. A couple is defined as one male and one female.

Over 50 Divisions :

Defined as an amateur couple whose partners are BOTH 50 years of age or older on the day of the competition. A couple is defined as one male and one female.

Over 60 Divisions :

Defined as an amateur couple whose partners are BOTH 60 years of age or older on the day of the competition. A couple is defined as one male and one female.

Professional :

After a dancer enters the Professional category, they are no longer eligible to compete as an amateur. However, professional dancers still have the option to participate alongside amateurs in the Pro-Am divisions.

Pro-Am :

Refers to a partnership format where a professional dancer (pro) pairs with an amateur dancer (am) to compete together. This format allows amateurs to gain experience, learn from professionals, and participate in competitions even if they aren’t at the professional level themselves. Pro-Am divisions are common in various dance styles, providing a valuable learning and performance opportunity for amateur dancers.

Pro-Am Female :

A professional male dancer dancing with an amateur female.

Pro-Am Female Over 40 :

A male professional dancer dancing with an amateur female aged 40 years old and over at the time of the competition.

Pro-Am Female Over 50 :

A male professional dancer dancing with an amateur female aged 50 years old and over at the time of the competition.

Pro-Am Female Over 60 :

A male professional dancer dancing with an amateur female aged 50 years old and over at the time of the competition.

Pro-Am Male :

A professional female dancer dancing with an amateur male.

Pro-Am Male Over 40 :

A female professional dancer dancing with an amateur male aged 40 years old and over at the time of the competition.

Pro-Am Male Over 50 :

A female professional dancer dancing with an amateur male aged 50 years old and over at the time of the competition.

Pro-Am Male Over 60 :

A female professional dancer dancing with an amateur male aged 60 years old and over at the time of the competition.

Pro-Am Team Showcase Divisions :

A team must consist of a minimum of 3 dancers. No maximum number of dancers. At least one dancer must be a professional. At least one dancer must be an amateur.

17 & Under :

Dancers must be 17 years of age or younger on the day of the competition to compete in this division.

Same-Gender :

Refers to a category or division where individuals of the same sex or gender identity compete together as partners or in groups. This category allows for dances to be performed by participants of the same gender, acknowledging, and celebrating diversity in dance styles and partnerships. Same-gender divisions have become increasingly recognized and included in dance competitions to provide opportunities for dancers who may prefer dancing with partners of the same gender.

Categories:

Categories are groupings of dance styles, techniques, or genres that share common traits, aiding in organizing and distinguishing various forms of dance. They facilitate the comprehension and study of diverse movements and artistic expressions in dance, each with distinct defining features.

Bachata :

A Dominican dance, involves a three-step with Cuban hip motion, followed by a hip tap on the fourth beat. Swaying hips are vital, embodying the dance’s soul. Lower body, especially hips, moves more than the upper body.

Cha-Cha :

A lively and rhythmic dance that originated in Cuba. It is characterized by quick, syncopated steps and hip movements, often danced to upbeat Latin music. The dance incorporates a distinctive pattern of three quick steps (cha-cha-cha) followed by two slower steps, giving it a playful and energetic feel. The Cha-Cha is also a popular ballroom dance style, often seen in dance competitions and social dance events, and it has become a staple in various music and dance cultures around the world.

Kizomba :

A popular partner dance and music genre that originated in Angola. The dance is known for its smooth and sensual movements, often characterized by close body contact between the partners. Kizomba music typically features a slow tempo and a fusion of African rhythms with elements of Caribbean and Latin music. The dance itself involves intricate footwork, gentle swaying of the hips, and fluid partner connections. While Kizomba is danced in close embrace, it emphasizes communication between partners through subtle shifts in weight, leading, and following.

Latin Hustle :

A dance style that emerged during the disco era in the 1970s. It combines elements of hustle, a partner dance that originated in the 1970s, with Latin dance influences. The Latin Hustle incorporates energetic footwork, spins, and partner patterns, often danced to disco and Latin music. This dance style is characterized by its dynamic and vibrant movements, which draw from Latin dance forms such as salsa, mambo, and cha-cha, while still maintaining the basic structure of the hustle. The Latin Hustle gained popularity during the disco era and continues to be danced in various social dance settings and events, showcasing the fusion of disco and Latin dance elements.

Merengue :

A lively Dominican dance where partners hold each other closely and move their hips side to side while doing simple steps. It’s known for its upbeat music and celebratory atmosphere, making it a popular social dance at parties and events.

Salsa :

All styles of Salsa are accepted. Couples can choose to dance either On1 or On2 but must maintain consistent to that timing for the duration of the routine or heat. Recognized timing for this competition is 1-2-3/5-6-7. Pro Am & Amateur Heated Divisions will have separate categories for Salsa On1 and for Salsa On2.

Shines :

Shines involve fancy footwork, intricate and stylish dancing done separately from your partner and can be choreographed, based on learned patterns, or improvised. In a shines category, there might be the inclusion of tricks, but lead and follow patterns are typically excluded.

West Coast Swing :

Originating in the US, particularly the West Coast, West Coast Swing is a versatile partner dance that interprets various music genres. It features smooth, slotted movements within a designated space on the floor. With a blend of counts, intricate footwork, and subtle partner connection, it suits crowded spaces and diverse tempos. Known for improvisation and creativity, West Coast Swing is a favored choice in social dances and global competitions.

Solo :

An individual performance category where a single dancer performs without a partner. It highlights the dancer’s skills, creativity, and stage presence.

Showcase :

Defined as a category where the partnership, the solo dancer or the team showcases their choreography and dances to the music of their choice.

Teams :

A collective of three or more dancers. Small Teams consist of 4 couples or 8 dancers or less. Large Teams consist of 5 or more couples, or 9 dancers or more.

Couple :

In dancing, a “couple” refers to a pair of individuals who dance together as partners. They work in tandem to execute choreography or dance moves that involve coordinated movements, connection, and interaction. In partner dances, such as ballroom, salsa, tango, and swing, the couple comprises a lead (usually the person who initiates the movements) and a follow (the person who responds to the lead’s cues). The connection and communication between the couple members are essential for creating a harmonious and visually appealing dance performance.

Check-In:

in the context of a competition refers to the process where competitors are required to register their presence at a specific competition venue, date, and time. This is typically done to confirm their participation and ensure that all participants are present and ready for the event. Check-in helps organizers manage the logistics of the competition, finalize the schedule, and ensure a smooth start to the event.

Combo Pass:

Experience an exclusive opportunity provided by the organizers, granting you access to all activities of both Festivals at a discounted rate. The two festivals being, the “Montreal Bachata Festival” and the “Montreal Heels Festival”.

Competitor Pass (Dancers Pass):

This offers the same benefits as a Regular Pass, ensuring that Competitor Pass holders enjoy the same privileges as those who bought a Regular Pass. Kindly note that all registered competitors are required to obtain a Pass.

Judging Criteria (Showcase Category)

In the Showcase Category, participants will perform a choreographed routine lasting from 1:30 minutes to 3:00 minutes (depending on the division), set to their chosen music. The judges will evaluate the performances, and the top 3 couples in each division will be awarded trophies or medals.

20% TIMING

Most of the routine should showcase precise and recognizable timing specific to the chosen dance genre (e.g., Salsa, Bachata, Hustle*). Competitors must maintain consistent timing throughout their routine, reflecting a strong understanding of the dance’s rhythm and tempo.

15% MUSICALITY

Couples will be assessed based on their ability to creatively interpret and adapt to the timing of their individual music. This creativity can manifest through various means, such as patterns, footwork, “hits,” tricks, and other choreographic elements. The choreography should harmoniously align with the music’s nuances.

15% GENERAL DANCE TECHNIQUE & DANCE SPECIFIC TECHNIQUE

Competitors’ dance technique will be evaluated based on elements like balance, alignment, and creating aesthetically pleasing lines. For partner dance, proper weight changes and grounded movement are essential. The execution should appear effortless and well-grounded. Dance-specific techniques, often referred to as “latin motion” or “sabor,” should be evident in the performance.

15% DIFFICULTY

The level of difficulty in the routine will be gauged by intricate patterns, challenging turns, complex shine movements, and the inclusion of advanced tricks, dips, drops, and flares. The evaluation will consider the execution of moves like turns on both double and single feet, intricate shines, jumps, kicks, extensions, and movements requiring exceptional balance, flexibility, or strength.

15% PARTNERING/CONNECTION

This criterion assesses the lead/follow dynamic in partner dance. Partners should exhibit a true connection, with seamless communication between lead and follow. The evaluation also considers synchronicity during side-by-side sequences or shines, indicating a strong partnership and synergy.

10% CHOREOGRAPHY

Couples’ interpretation of the music through choreography will be evaluated. Effective choreography should incorporate creative turn patterns and shines that align with the music’s phrasing. Spatial awareness and utilization of the dance floor are important. Originality in choreographic choices is a significant factor in this category.

10% OVERALL PRESENTATION/SHOWMANSHIP

This category encompasses several aspects, including costuming, showmanship, and sportsmanship. Competitors’ overall presentation on stage, including their stage presence, charisma, and audience engagement, contributes to their showmanship score. Additionally, adherence to good sportsmanship practices during the competition is vital.

*Recognized Salsa Timing is designated as 1-2-3, 5-6-7. Competitors can choose to break ON 1 or ON 2 but must maintain consistency throughout the routine. The direction of the break step can be either to the front or the back, as long as the timing of the break is consistently maintained (either 1 and 5, or 2 and 6). Most of the routine should demonstrate recognizable Salsa Timing.

Judging Criteria (Heats Category): 

In a heated division, where lead and follow take center stage instead of choreography, multiple couples share the floor simultaneously. Participants can compete in their own level and one level higher. The performances, without entrances or exits, lifts, or tricks, will be evaluated by a panel of judges who will assign scores to each couple. Additionally, competitors will dance to DJ-selected music, with one song per heat lasting 1 to 1.5 minutes. The music’s tempo will be tailored to each division’s level, maintaining a slower pace for beginners, a mid-tempo for Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate levels, and a faster rhythm for Pre-Advanced and Advanced divisions.

• Consistent Rhythm: Maintain the dance’s rhythm consistently throughout the performance.
• Recognizable Dance Styles: The performance must be recognizable as Salsa, Bachata, Cha-Cha, Merengue, Hustle, or West Coast Swing according to the division.
• Lead and Follow: Dynamic partnership between the leader and follower, where the leader maintains rhythm, directs figures, and guides movement, while the follower interprets signals and executes steps. In adhering to this rule, dancers ensure a synchronized and harmonious presentation, embodying the essence of partner dance.
• Shines Limit: Shines or side-by-side movements should not exceed 20% of the performance.
• No Dips, Lifts, or Tricks: Dips, lifts, and tricks are prohibited in the routine.
• Lifts Definition: A lift involves both dancers having both feet off the floor simultaneously, assisted or supported by their partner.
• Lifts Prohibition: In all heated divisions, no moves with both feet leaving the ground at the same time with partner assistance are allowed.
• Penalties: Points deducted for both feet leaving the ground; disqualification if any part of a dancer’s body goes above the partner’s shoulders.
• Call-backs:
  
  • Fewer than 12 entries: Likely no call-backs, couples dance only once.
  • 13-20 entries: 6 to 10 couples called back for an additional dance to determine final placing.
  • More than 20 entries: Competitors could be called back once or twice to determine final placing.
  • Note: Call-backs may change based on head judge and competition manager discretion, considering time constraints.

Heats Level Descriptions:

Beginner/Newcomer/Novice Level

• Designed for novice dancers.
• Emphasizes basic foundational elements.
• Connection: Must always maintain connection (no shines allowed), no traveling across the room.
• Turns: Single and 1 ½ left turns allowed (e.g., Cross Body Lead).
• No double turns or multiple spins allowed.
• No consecutive 1 1/2 turns.
• Guideline: Typically for students dancing for less than a year or those new to heated competition.

Pre-Intermediate Level

• Aimed at advanced beginners or those in Intermediate classes, new to competition.
• Allows for more rhythmic diversity and additional elements beyond basics.
• Turns: Single and 1 1/2 turns allowed; consecutive 1 1/2 turns permitted (e.g., cross body lead).
• No multiple spins.
• Guideline: Generally, for students dancing for at least a year, with or without prior competition experience.

Intermediate Level

• Suitable for those with good social dancing skills.
• Allows free spins, double turns, traveling in a straight line.
• Patterns, syncopations, shines, and body movement are incorporated.
• Intermediate level patterns permitted, including double turns, syncopations, and shines.
• No multiple spins beyond double turns.
• Guideline: Typically for students dancing 1-2 years, with or without previous competition experience.

Pre-Advanced Level & Advanced Level

• Meant for serious competitors with strong technical skills and musical interpretation.
• Proficiency in intermediate level material required for advancement.
• Encompasses partner work, multiple spins, traveling, shines, intricate hand changes, touch and go spot turns, etc.
• Incorporates styling and musicality, maintaining lead-follow structure.
• No dips, lifts, or tricks allowed.
• Guideline: Usually for students dancing at least 2 years, possibly with previous competition experience or participation in performance or amateur teams.
